Need some help with my vintage Santos Dumont

Hey all.

New member and this is my first post in the Cartier forum.

I recently picked up a vintage Santos Dumont, and I was hoping to get some help, or information about the watch, and servicing in Canada.

What I read online was that these were produced around 1978. The sellers father bought it in 1984 at Cartier here in Ontario.

Solid gold Cartier deployment clasp, and a solid white and yellow gold case. The case measures 24.5mm without the crown and 35mm lug to lug. I'm not sure if this is the gents size, but it was sold to the sellers father as a gents watch, so I must assume it is so. That said, I love the size.

The dial with PARIS under the six is apparently not very common. The dial has some crazing, but not enough to warrant replacing it. The cabochon in the crown is cracked, so if I can't have the cabochon replaced, I'll have to hope Cartier/Richmont can source the correct crown.

I need to decide if I'm sending it to Richmont/Cartier for servicing. I've heard some horror stories about Cartier's servicing, but nothing about the Richmont Group in Mississauga, ON. If anyone has experience with them it would be helpful in making my decision.

Here's some pics. Any input would be greatly appreciated

Aside from experiences with Cartier servicing, if anyone could provide some info about the watch such as age, production dates, possible movement info, that would be very helpful. Also, I'm pretty sure this is a gents size, but I'm hoping some more knowle...

Watch overhaul

It seems that your watch needs a complete overhaul. It's better to send it to Cartier for servicing. I don't know what "horror" stories have you heard but Cartier has everything in place to make it like new. A watch needs to be serviced every 5-6 years ma...

Hi Constantin. Thank you for your reply. The watch does need servicing, as I stated in my post. My question is on the quality of service performed by Cartier. Here in Canada, Cartier/Richmont Group sends their watches to a contracted watchmaker: From Hon...

Your watch can be serviced locally. Usually watches from Fine Watchmaking Collection are sent to Switzerland for servicing. I don't live in Canada but the conditions to be Cartier approved service provider are the same everywhere. It's true, all the key p...

Once again, excellent answer by Constantin.

You know, the people are more interested in trains which arrive late than right on time. You will always find comments about poor services or tricky situations for any brand. Because I don't know a brand which has a 100% quality. Believe me, the quality o...
