Cartier: The future is in the past

Thank you FrX for the quick report. I hear that some luxury houses also launched their new ultra-lux jewellery and watch collections at this Paris Antiques Fair.

The Jacques Grange interior design is “a free interpretation of the gardens of Versailles.” - his words....not mine.

Cartier has one of the biggest booths at 250 sq m, which works out at up to  €400,000 rental fees before discount. That is an indication of the lucrative high end market.

Although the Biennale des Antiquaires started as an antique fair, the big jewellery houses seem to have morphed it into a showcase to launch their ultra haute joaillerie and watch collections that can take two years to design and execute. Its a good thing that this is a biennial event!

What is the rationale of showing new pieces at an antiques fair?
Prospective buyers at the Biennale will need “at least €50,000” for any purchases.
The rationale is that the brand-new haute joaillerie of today is the vintage of tomorrow....

MTF
