First Cartier Tank Louis and a request for a little info about it...

Apr 29, 2010,15:26 PM

First of all, let me say hello to all the members of this excellent discussion board. I have been lurking here occasionally and I have to say: every time I stop by, the knowledge and the watches shown here are really impressive--kudos!

I come mainly from the milieu of vintage watches, usually Sports models & Chronographs, but I have hankered after a classic 18k Tank for some time now (maybe due to passing the big 4-0?), having previously owned a Santos 100 and found it a bit too large for my personal tastes. So today, I rather impulsively bought this little beauty...

...I am a sucker for guilloché dials..

But being rather ignorant of Cartier model variations and back codes, I'd like to ask the learned members of this forum to help me decrypt this nomenclature...

Maybe I've read somewhere that "960" is a prefix signifying the Piguet movement? Please correct me if I'm wrong on that... And what would be the general consensus on the era of production? I would guess 1990s, perhaps, and I am trying to get the original papers but until then, I am pretty much in the dark in terms of chronology. Maybe the rest of the serial points to this or other characteristics of the watch are indicative of its age. such as the plexi crystal?

I'd also like to get a valuation on the current market price for this sort of Tank to see whether I ate the bear or the bear ate me on this purchase, if you know what I mean.  I'm not sure that's done around here, so I'll leave that alone for now...but if anyone wants to contact me directly about that, I'm all ears.

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide and I'm very happy to share my first Tank Louis with you all.
Best regards,
Tom

Cartier LC Tank

Congrats with the LC Tank. You bought one of the most important icons in watch history! I will try to answer some of your questions. Cartier originally released the Tank LC in 1919 and the watch has always been in the catalogue since. Over the years the m...

Cheers, Geo, and thanks very much for the reply...

...I was lucky enough to see the new LC Tank XL Date/PR in the metal and it is, of course, stunning. Just digging around the net for specific info regarding my version, I came across these vendor pix which seem to match: The seller (and maybe the style of...

No ETA

 By: Geo : April 30th, 2010-09:36
I am almost sure I am right in saying that Cartier did not use ETA movements for their mechanical LC Tanks, at least not for the ones produced between 1985 and Collection PrivĂ©e. Your watch has a Frediric Piguet movement IMHO. It's hard to say for me, whe...

Ahh, OK, Geo--thanks. To me...

...that makes sense. Hopefully the papers turn up and I can post a concrete date of original purchase. Or if I get it serviced I will have my watchmaker note the movement caliber. But this LC Tank with fancy dial and "upgraded" Piguet movement makes sense...

I'll ask the factory for a definite answer on the age and movement inside

Apologies for the late response, been travelling till yesterday. I agree with Geo on the approximate age but will see what additional info I can get. - SJX
