Cartier Fine Watchmaking at SIHH 2012 comprises a solid and varied range. At the very top is a new calibre in the minute repeater, but there are also useful new entry level timepieces, like the new annual calendar with an eminently practical display. We’ll start with the watches many have long asked for – with smaller case sizes. Two models have been unveiled, the first being the Rotonde Flying Tourbillon. It uses the same tourbillon calibre with Geneva Seal first seen in the Ballon Bleu tourb... more
A few weeks ago I posted an interview with samwan, a sophisticated collector well known on this forum, who also happens to own the Santos Dumont Skeleton in white gold. As I mentioned in that post, that will be the first in a series of owner interviews. Read the second interview. - SJX ... more
On Dec 13 the Art Science Museum at the Marina Bay Sands casino and resort in Singapore was bathed in red for the opening gala of the spectacular Time Art exhibition. The Cartier logo projected on the building was visible from across the bay. See more photos of the event. - SJX ... more
Before the wristwatch, when pocket watches were widely used, they were sold as is, with a presentation box. Often the chain was sold separately as well. Today pocket watches are no longer practical but have evolved into miniature clocks, to be displayed grandly on a desk. And for that reason, I predict pocket watches are in the early stages of making a comeback. Continue reading... - SJX ... more
Three days ago Cartier Time Art opened in Singapore. An amazing collection of 159 watches and clocks are on display at the lotus-shaped Art Science Museum in Marina Bay Sands until Feb 12, 2012. Read on... - SJX ... more
The flagship watch for the Fine Watchmaking collection at SIHH 2012 is the magnificent Rotonde de Cartier Minute Repeater Flying Tourbillon watch. The tone, volume (68 dB) and clarity are superb, as is the finishing (the movement has the Geneva Seal). In fact this is the best finished Cartier watch produced today, in my humble opinion. The enormous, 185 piece Cartier exhibition opens in Singapore next week. Some of the highlights of the show will be Cartier's fabulous Mystery clocks. These are incredible objects that marry art, mechanics and history. Continue reading... - SJX ... more
A couple of days ago the Cartier boutique in Singapore’s Ngee Ann City just reopened after extensive redecoration. The prime space located in the front of the shopping mall, facing Orchard Road, has been reworked to bring it in line with other Cartier boutiques. The same materials, colours and textures, like the chocolate carpets and fabric wall panels, found in other Cartier stores are now found here. Read on... ... more
For the first time outside of Switzerland Cartier will showcase the largest exhibition of Cartier timepieces totalling 159 pieces in the world. Cartier Time Art opens in the Marina Bay Sands casino and resort on Dec 14 and will run until Feb 12, 2012. Timepieces on display range from one of the first ever Cartier timepieces, a chatelaine watch from the 1850s, to Cartier's famous mystery clocks as well as contemporary creations like the lubricant-free ID One concept watch of 2010. The ex... more
The Santos skeleton watches from the Fine Watchmaking collection are amongst the bestsellers of the range. On this forum the Santos Dumont skeleton in white gold has proven especially popular with several owners here, including Sam Wan, who posted his watch some time ago. I’ve decided to do a short series of owner interviews on this specific watch with the same set of questions presented to each owner. They will be posted over a period of time with the first owner being Sam. Read the intervi... more
Last year in my conversations with several executives of Geneva based brands the topic of upcoming changes to the Geneva Seal was often mentioned. The criteria for the seal had not changed in many years and it was losing prestige bit by bit, especially after Patek Philippe abandoned it in favour of its own Patek seal. Cartier of course has the Geneva Seal on its flying tourbillon calibres made in Geneva. Read more on the changes. ... more
The first watch from the Fine Watchmaking collection to be reveald is the Rotonde de Cartier Cadran Lové Tourbillon watch. It is actually a variant of the ladies' tourbillon with crocodile launched at SIHH 2012 but replacing the crocodile are oversized skeletonised Roman numerals, building on the theme very successfully applied to the Santos skeleton watches for example. See more of the pre-SIHH 2012 novelties . - SJX ... more
The Hall of Time Boutique organized last Wednesday and last Thursday two events to present to the guests a comprehensive overview of the Cartier collection including the Haute Horlogerie one. I had the chance to attend the Thursday event and I would like to share with you this report.First of all, the surprise for me was that the Boutique was fully and nicely decorated under the Cartier banner: entrance, displays, colours...The second surprise was the use for the cocktail of a sushis conveyor b... more
Of the six Metier d’Art models unveiled at SIHH 2011, the most costly and limited (10 pieces only compared to 40 to 80 pieces for the other models) was the Rotonde de Cartier with turtle motif in stone mosaic. At a glance this doesn’t seem like much, but up close it is an extraordinary piece of work. Continue reading... ... more
The Santos 100 was introduced in 2004 to mark the centenary of the original Santos of 1904. For the first year of production the watches were engraved “1904-2004” on the back, making the first year models a bit more special. Since then the Santos 100 has become a bestseller and the steel version is possibly the most popular single Cartier model of today. Two sizes are available, the Santos 100 LM and MM, the Large Model and Medium Model respectively. Continue reading... &nbs... more
